The South African Broadcasting Corporation is planning to fire about 800 workers as part of its turn-around strategy according to an article published by Business Live, which says that the Communication Workers' Union is outraged by the plan.

It quotes the CWU as saying that the SABC is trying to use its failure to hurt workers and this was in defiance of an undertaking given to the union two months ago by the SABC that workers would not be retrenched.

The CWU claims that individuals in the SABC are "hell-bent on destroying the values of the union movement". Business Live says that the SABC will need R6,9-billion in government funding over the next three years to survive.
