Discovering the ‘reel' Israel

The 2007 Israeli Film Festival at Cinema Nouveau screened by Jameson will be featuring eight award-winning films from the diverse cultures of Israel in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town from the beginning of June 2007. The aim is to spotlight Israel's thriving film industry, to enrich the South African vision of Israel's social and cultural diversity, and to advance tolerance and understanding.

Films on offer at the festival range from a variety of themes focusing on religious beliefs, the Holocaust, identity and human relationships. Must-sees on the festival are the films Out of Sight – for which director Daniel Syrkin won the Israeli equivalent of the Academy Award (Oscar) – and the festival's opening night film Three Mothers (which also garnered a few accolades at the Israeli Academy Awards last year and at various international film festivals).

Other films include family drama Three Mothers; short drama Pesya's Necklace (to be screened with short romantic comedy Like a Fish Out of Water); drama Dear Mr Waldman, drama Wasserman – The Rain Man; drama A Green Chariot; and romance Something Sweet.

Catch the 2007 Israeli Film Festival at Cinema Nouveau screened by Jameson Rosebank (Johannesburg), 1 – 7 June, then at Brooklyn (Pretoria), 8 – 14 June, at Gateway (Durban), 15 – 21 June and finally at the V&A Waterfront (Cape Town), 22 – 28 June.
