Amplats committed to empowering women

Anglo American Platinum Limited's (Amplats) commitment to the upliftment and empowerment of women has resulted in the company scooping top awards at South Africa's Top Women Awards 2011. The company won in the resources category, as well as the overall award at a recent gala event held in Midrand.
Amplats committed to empowering women

Khanyisile Kweyama, executive head: human resources, paid tribute to both the women and men within Amplats, in accepting the awards. "I would like to dedicate this award to the women in our organisation who are achieving great success in making their mark in a previously dominated male environment. However, it is also important to acknowledge our male colleagues, who continue to work tirelessly to transform our organisation into one that empowers the development of women," Kweyama said.

She added that the awards were a significant recognition of the strides women were making in creating a truly transformed workplace. Statistics demonstrate that the company is committed to furthering the development of women. Included in this is Cynthia Carroll, the chairperson of the Platinum Board, which also has 25% female representation. Further, there are two women on the EXCO team, a total of 9,4% women in senior positions and 18,4% in management.

Cadet schemes to recruit women

In addition, 12% of employees at Amplats are female, with a large percentage working in core disciplines such as mining, engineering, and metallurgy. Specific emphasis is also placed on the recruitment of women through cadet schemes and learnerships in critical skills. Notably, to date, 2,494 women work in various disciplines underground.

CEO Neville Nicolau concluded that the achievement was in line with the company's long-term goals. "Winning this award for the second year in a row proves that we are on track in our desire to make a real difference to the development of women by transforming our organisation. I would like to thank everyone at Platinum for their commitment and dedication in helping us achieve this goal, and ensuring that our company is the employer of choice."
