One fired, three suspended at North West testing station

One person has been fired and three others suspended for issuing fraudulent learners licences and roadworthy certificates in the North West, the province's public safety department said on Friday.

At the Rustenburg testing station, 73 learners licences were issued fraudulently in the last quarter of 2011, said spokesman Simon Mmope in a statement.

The cashier involved has been dismissed, following an internal investigation.

He said a criminal case was also being investigated by the commercial crime unit.

"The department has already nullified the said fraudulently issued learners licences, and advised those who acquired them illegally to take the normal procedural route."

Mmope said in the same period, two vehicles had been issued with roadworthy certificates while the examiner at the Vryburg testing station was on leave.

The department was also investigating a similar incident at the Delareyville station, in which 14 vehicles were issued with roadworthy certificates and 22 roadworthy certificates were issued, despite the vehicles never being tested.

"One examiner from Vryburg and two from Delareyville have been suspended, pending criminal case investigations by the special Investigating Unit and Commercial Crime Unit," said Mmope.

MEC for public safety Desbo Mohono has condemned the fraud and sent a warning to all those implicated.

"As government we will continue to condemn fraud and corruption, within the public service and anywhere else in this country," she said.
