Provinces spend just R83,8 billion
South African provinces spent a paltry 22,9% or R83,8 billion of their combined total budgets of R365,5 billion in the first quarter of this year according to a report published by Business Live.
The figures were compiled by the Treasury and cover spending between April and June of the 2011/12 financial year. It says the spending was 10,8% or R8,1 billion, higher than the same period last year when the provinces spent R75,7 billion.
Business Live says the bulk of expenditure went on education after R37,9 billion was spent by the combined education budgets. Health expenditure totalled R25,1 billion.
