    Scholarship paves road for achiever

Jason Field, 23, was awarded the R50,000-a-year premier's top achievers scholarship by Noxolo Kiviet for his outstanding academic performance in the special needs pupils' category five years ago...

Yesterday he graduated cum laude from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University with a bachelor of education degree, specialising in further education and training.

The former Cape Recife High School pupil, whose love for teaching was fostered during a gap year of Bible studies and youth ministry, did not relax the high academic performance that secured him the scholarship.

While deciding on what to study, Field attended Bible college at Word of Faith in 2010, where he was lauded as student of the year.

Staying at the Xanadu men's residence while at university from 2011, Field was the residence's top achiever in education.

In his final year last year, in which he did his practical at Theodor Herzl High School, he attained six distinctions and yesterday graduated cum laude.

"Without that premier's bursary, this would not have been possible," he said.

Field plans to continue his studies, working towards an honours degree in whole school management.

"I'll also take a maths module as an extra because of the dire need for maths teachers.

"A lot of my friends who have work were picked because of having maths," he said.

Fields aims to one day tackle issues affecting education.

His advice to youngsters is not to be attracted to worldly things.

"You are only young once. Strive and stay focused on your career.

"That is what is going to pay your salary one day," he said.
