SSP high school scholarships - applications closing soon

The Student Sponsorship Programme (SSP) is on the lookout for Grade 6 learners from low-income homes to apply for a five-year SSP scholarship to attend one of the programmes 25 partner schools. Applicants should be no older than 12, with marks of 70% and above in Maths, Science and English.

Non-profit trust, SSP has awarded over 1,500 academic scholarships since 2000, to deserving scholars to attend top independent and public high schools in the country – including St. John’s College, Kingsmead College, Clarendon High School for Girls and Pretoria Boys High School.

Besides academic prowess, the applicants should be active in sport, be engaged in the community and display leadership potential. The combined household income must not exceed R20,000 per month, to qualify to apply for the scholarship programme.

The 10-month recruitment process includes an entrance exam, interviews with the parents and guardians and includes tests to assess intellectual quotient (IQ) and emotional quotient (EQ), concluding with a camp to assess peer interaction.

SSP aims to nurture future leaders with this five-year scholarship programme which includes tuition, school uniform and much more. The support given is not only academic and psycho-social, it also covers mentorship and parental support. Orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) are offered additional assistance.

SSP’s 28 Matric Scholars in 2018 brought home 71 distinctions in the IEB and NSC examinations, compared to a total of 52 for 2017. Our top IEC matriculant, Rockville’s Katlego Mahlo (St Mary’s Waverley) earned eight distinctions and is at the University of Cape Town (UCT) with her BSC Actuarial Science and our top NSC matriculant, Travis Bartosch (Selborne College) took home four distinctions and is doing a general BSC at UCT.
