Joburg Burning joins Pop Academy

In a new initiative, Joburg Burning - the established music weekend - has joined forces with Pop Academy, a music conference of popular music with panels, seminars, master classes and networking sessions. The weekend of music and seminars will be held on 1 and 2 April, 2011.

Joburg Burning showcases over 40 top South African artists from the gigging circuit and is known for breaking artists into the live scene.

Over the weekend of the 1 and 2 April, 2011, the Newtown and Melville areas will be transformed into a holistic musical experience. By day, surrounding venues will play host to seminars, live performances, workshops, speed dating and lectures before the sun sets, to an all round rocking night.

Pop Academy

It has become necessary to introduce a conference that focuses on the live industry while keeping track of new technology and trends. Pop Academy aims to focus on the challenges and opportunity concerning popular music to which most musicians are not privy. Discussions will focus more on the live and digital areas, but also feature topics on publishing, label and other music business modules.

The stakeholders are music managers, agents, festival promoters, digital content providers, publishers, record labels and then, of course, a host of "gigging-on the road" musical groups.

Genres being covered are: hip hop, rock, pop, Afro pop, singer songwriter and R'nB cultures.

Discussion topics will include:
* How to get your group into South Africa's top festivals.
* How do I get sponsorship for my band?
* What does the Music Manager Forum provide?
* How is SAMRO evolving in the modern day?
* Everything you need to know about publishing.

During the day, Melville's clubs, bars and live venues will transform into conference rooms and meeting places for networking and speed dating. Dance areas will be transformed into seating areas and stages will become platforms to educate knowledge-hungry industry professionals.

As a large number of musicians will already be performing at Joburg Burning, a sizeable number of targeted delegates are already guaranteed entrance to this conference. Not forgetting the industry professionals that are also expected to attend, interested members of the general public will be allowed to participate if they register, as their armbands will give them full access to the whole conference.

One ticket gives the public access to the entire Pop Academy conference, as well as the entire festival of Joburg Burning.

After the sun sets and Pop Academy finishes the last panel, the venues will be transformed back and play host to Joburg Burning.

Up to five venues will showcase over 40 South Africa bands. There will be free shuttle buses to commute people between venues.

On Friday, 1 April, Joburg Burning will visit the Newtown area, while on Saturday the 2nd it will stay in Melville.
