Miriam Makeba honoured

In recognition of the first anniversary of the music icon's death, a commemorative event, “SA pays tribute to Miriam Makeba” will take place from 7 - 9 November 2009 in Gauteng, including a free, public concert at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 7 November 2009.

The event has been made possible by many contributors, spearheaded by the Department of Arts and Culture.

“The tribute to Miriam Makeba” is also in line with the Department of Arts and Culture's heritage and development strategies. In a recent speech, Minister of Arts and Culture, Lulu Xingwana made particular mention of national legacy projects, saying her department is committed to "broadening access to heritage resources in the country".

The importance of Makeba's legacy was also underscored in June 2009, when Minister Xingwana spoke at a dinner to commemorate the signing of South Africa-Algeria co-operation on arts and culture and in honour of Makeba in Algiers, Algeria.

"Today we pay tribute to the first African cultural activist to address the United Nations General Assembly, 'Mama Afrika', Miriam Zenzile Makeba, whom all of us remember as a songstress, tireless activist and a selfless patriot," the Minister said.

Family reaction

Says family spokesperson and Makeba's grandson, Nelson Lumumba Lee: "She was a true humanitarian and activist who was fervent in her opposition of the apartheid government though her artistry and also dedicated a great deal of her time to assist those less privileged. The Miriam Makeba concert is very important to us, her family, as it means that the world will never forget Miriam Makeba and we are delighted to celebrate with the rest of the country on the day. "

It is the ability that Makeba had to touch hearts and minds throughout the world that will be celebrated during the 7 November concert, which will feature musical heavyweights drawn from across the globe.

The performers

The performers include, among others: Manu Dibango (Cameroon), Angelique Kidjo (Benin), Salif Keita (Mali), Busi Mhlongo, Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Abigail Kubeka, Dorothy Masuka, Malaika, Soul Brothers, Drakensburg choir and Ntando.

This free event at the Union Buildings, is expected to draw 30 000 people. A number of emerging musicians will also be showcased during the day.

South African musician, Sipho Mabuse will be the musical director for the November 9th memorial gala dinner at the State Theatre, to be attended by politicians, ambassadors, and Makeba's family. It will feature Makeba's music in a programme that weaves live music with archival visuals and footage of one of South Africa's most treasured, globally revered and prolific artists.
