Shelter Music set to be major player in South Africa's music scene

Newly-formed Shelter Music is set to be a major player in South Africa's house and urban music scenes with its emphasis on quality, excellence and high-end talent. The Johannesburg-based label is a newcomer in name but the team behind this dynamic offering in the South African music industry is not: in fact, Shelter Music is the new name for Sheer Music, which has established itself as a leader in the house market over the past decade.

Among the acts Sheer Music has broken in recent years is DJ Mujava whose ‘Township Funk' has catapulted through international barriers and become a bonafide international dance hit.

Says Shelter Music's MD, Mark Connor, “We are very proud of what we have achieved at Sheer Music, and aim to continue that high level of professionalism on all fronts at Shelter Music.”

Although Sheer Music will still continue to exist through many of the projects it has already released, Connor and his team will focus intently on Shelter Music with its vision to become the premier home for quality domestic and international house and urban music. Already Shelter Music's roster includes some established Sheer Music artists that have moved into the new Shelter Music set up, but leaving room for Shelter Music to also focus on exciting new local talent/artists like DJ Fresca & Kudoskelem, MO & Mac G, DJ Qness and more…

In driving Shelter Music Connor is joined by the highly regarded Tshepo Motaung, who will head up the Local, Urban and House departments, with Qhubani Ndlovu taking charge of Marketing. Several freelancers - who will work on projects within the label - complete the team.

Says Motaung, “We are very excited about being able to fine tune what we have been doing over the past years and really focus on the urban and house end of the market.”

Shelter Music is not about to let the challenging market deter it from developing South African talent, in particular producers who have what it takes to significantly impact the market. Adds Connor, “We aim to aggressively service our artists, DJs and product brands with the high level of professionalism that those in the industry have come to expect from us.”

The emphasis at Shelter Music is on quality over quantity and on releasing both international and South African artists, albums and projects that speak directly to the specific South African market place. With house and urban music directly in its sights, Shelter Music is throwing its doors open to “proactive and enthusiastic” local urban talent who are willing to work in partnership with the label to create successful products.

“Shelter Music is something that the team is really throwing its heart and soul into,” says Connor. “Our primary focus is uncovering and bringing in amazing young talent into the stable, particularly in the urban market. But with key staff and freelance talent we plan to keep the door open to pop and rock acts and labels, both locally and internationally.

“We believe we have the experience, the passion and a sufficient enough grasp on the shifting global music industry to be able to make a real impact early on.”
