#MusicExchange: B Charles releases new single

Cape Town R&B singer B Charles aka Branton Charles recently returned home after years of performing in Spain. Last Friday he released his new single entitled "Good Times".

I caught up with him last week.

The new decade means:

Rolling with the times and staying current in everything.

Fame is about:

Understanding the power you have and how to use it for the greater good and to inspire.

Retirement will happen when:

I believe every artist will know when it's their time and it's time to share and teach the younger generation so they don’t make the same mistakes we made.

What does music mean to you?

Music is my source of rescue, it shaped me to become the man I am today. Music is my life.

BizcommunityWhat is the most enjoyable aspect of your work?

To have my story being heard and appreciated. Always learning more about my ability to write music and tapping into different genres of music writing.

Any funny moments on stage?

Forgetting the opening line of the song, which caused the band to loop the intro again.

Which living person do you admire most and why?

Kevin Hart. He is one of the hardest working people I have ever come across. Watching his documentary, Don’t Fck This Up, made me feel extremely lazy and showed me that I wasn’t working hard enough with my music.

What is your most treasured possession?

My punching bag. I get to take out all my frustrations on the bag

It’s your round, what are you drinking?

Tequila shots.

What makes you stand out?

I sing and dance, so with my original music I incorporate that style of performance. It’s a style we don’t currently have in the SA market.

Nicknames?

Bekkies is my childhood nickname and to this day not many people know my real name lol. Some people just call me (B) lol. B Charles is my stage name. Brother B is what some will call me lol. Sir B Charles is the burger that is named after me from the Hood Kitchen.

If you were not a musician, what would you do?

I would be a boxer and a fitness instructor

Pick five words to describe yourself:

Humble, hardworking, prepared, dedicated, giving.

What song changed your life?

My first single, “Closest to Heaven”. It reached number one in the Berlin charts and not being a signed artist. These things don’t just happen. That really made me believe in myself more.

What is your favourite word?

My favourite word is ‘easy’ because life should be like that. Instead, we find the total opposite, so before I complain I say easy instead.

Favourite fashion garment:

Track Pants because I am always in a rush to go someplace.

Give us some real proper slang and what it means

Mirrle sirrle. It means something is over but in a very hilarious way.

Top of your bucket list:

Open up my Creative Hub Project, a place for artists of any kind to have a place to go to and just network and link up with other artists.

Your greatest achievement:

Having my wife and daughter at my side throughout this journey.Nothing can and will ever top this. Family.

What do you complain about most often?

The music industry and we cultivate covers so much that people make million-dollar careers out of it and the original music does not get the full recognition it deserves.

What is your fear?

That we never get to live out our full potential and to understand the true meaning of what it is to say you are living and not just alive. There is a difference.

Happiness is:

Being grateful for whatever you have. We have not all been dealt the right cards in life, but work with what you have and bluff sometimes you will be surprised.

On stage, I tend to:

Work and sing my heart out.

The best life lesson you have been taught:

Until you know who you are, you cannot know what you can become.

Do you do charity work and, if you do, what do you do?

Once a year, I perform for the Tom Ro Haven where we raise money for horses and children.

Wishes and dreams:

Change things for the next generation of artists to come to make it easier for them.
