The programme highlights the talent lost to HIV/AIDS and how this disease has decimated thousands of entertainers and artists in South Africa. They are our "Lost Voices". Mzwandile Matiwane was one. He wrote poetry while in St Albans jail where he spent 14 years and also while living under a bridge in Cape Town. He sometimes appeared at "Off-The-Wall" poetry evenings in Observatory where he masqueraded as The Hobo Poet. His health deteriorated and in 2008 he moved back to his mother's home in Port Elizabeth, where he passed away in that same year.
"Lost Voices" is an attempt, not only to honour his tragic life, but also the many unknown voices that we have lost to HIV/AIDS. Jola was a friend and mentor of Matiwane. His play, A New Struggle, will form the centrepiece of the short evening of poetry, music, dance and performance.
Proceeds from the evening will go to Matiwane's mother and to Monty Jola's Township Theatre Performance Group.
