Accident Claim Football Lives

The South African Football Association (SAFA) is shocked and saddened by the death of four players in Kokstad, Kwazulu Natal. The four players were members of New Wales Football Club, and they lost their lives in a car accident on their way to honour a SAFA Metropolitan League fixture against Lucky Stars Football Club in Kokstad.

It is reported that the driver lost control of the car while crossing the Mzintlava Bridge, three players died instantly while the fourth player died on arrival at the Kokstad hospital. The deceased are Vuyani Ngcaweni, Thembalethu Manteke, Wilson Nkanyana and Sipho Ndlovu.

The injured players were rushed to Kokstad hospital for medical treatment; two players are still in hospital while the rest were discharged.

SAFA Vice President Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana says it is tragic to loose four young players, he says the Football Family is saddened and shocked by the news. Chief Nonkonyana was accompanied by the Mayor and Speaker of Kokstad Municipality to visit the injured at the hospital. Chief Nonkonyana later led a Football delegation to the families of the deceased.

“We have conveyed our heartfelt condolences to the families during our visit, it is extremely tragic for us and the families to loose our sons on the eve of two major football competitions in our country, but with the blessing of SAFA President Dr Molefi Oliphant, Football will do everything possible to support the families in this difficult time “, Says Nonkonyana.

Chief Nonkonyana and the President of SAFA Sisonke, together with other members of the Local Football Association, also visited the scene of the accident. Plans for the joint Funeral are underway, and further details will be made available at a later date.
