Mykonos Offshore Regatta 2014 another success
The 65 nautical mile race took sailors from the Royal Cape Yacht Club start line in Table Bay, all the way through to Club Mykonos on the West Coast. The start of the race began with a light 10 knot North West wind, which allowed the first boats to get off the line into an upwind race. As the fleet headed up to Dassen Island the wind picked up for the front runners given the first half of the fleet a really good sail.
Later into the day, with wind slowly disappearing, and the mist arriving, the weather conditions made it challenging for most of the fleet to finish. The first yachts started coming in at 7pm Friday evening, and the last yacht made an appearance in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The RCYC had entered their Sailing Academy into the regatta for the first time this year, and were sailing neck on neck with world class skipper, JJ Provoyeur, which was indeed a proud moment for Harry Brehm who represented the academy.
The Pursuit Bay race which followed on Saturday was equally as remarkable, with so many yachts taking part in the fun race around Saldahna Bay, and spectators enjoying the spirited competitiveness of the sailors.
The prize giving and dinner was held at the Bouzouki restaurant at the resort. There were trophies awarded for the IRC Class, Multihull Class, Division 1, 2, 3 Fleet, and the RCYC Handicap Overall. A first prize for each division that had five or more starters was also issued, and some other prizes based on performance. The ceremonious proceeding led onto one big celebration which lasted up until the early hours of the Sunday morning.
