SA's top food and health journalists named

Drum's Hope Malau and Woolworths Taste's Abigail Donnelly have been named South Africa's top food writers in the 2015 Galliova Food and Health Writers' Awards.

Malau scooped the Galliova Food Writer of the Year Award in the newspapers/weeklies category, and Donnelly the Galliova Food Writer of the Year Award in the magazines category at the recent Galliova Awards ceremony, held at Cavalli Wine & Stud Estate in Somerset West.

They were joined on the winner's podium by Wine Style & Good Taste's Diane Heierli, who was named the Galliova Egg Champion of the Year; Vrouekeur's Christa Swanepoel, who walked away with the Galliova Special Health Writer's Award; Fresh Living's Anna-Carolina Alberts, who won the Galliova Up-and-Coming Food Writer of the Year; and Rooi Rose's Salomé Delport who took the Galliova Health Writer of the Year title.

Special health writer's award

As there was no winner in the new up-and-coming health writer category, a special health writer's award was given to Christa Swanepoel who has consistently provided well-written and balanced health articles and has given excellent coverage to eggs.

The Galliova Awards honour the country's outstanding food writers for their excellence in food writing, food styling and the overall promotion of SA's food culture as well as local health writers for their writing excellence and balanced reporting on health and nutrition issues.

This year's judging panel included Dorah Sitole, former True Love Food Editor and cook book author; Anna Montali, former Food and Deputy Editor of Food & Home Entertaining; Jackie Cameron, chef, tutor, writer and cook book author; Hetta van Deventer-Terblanche, author, culinary manager at Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant in Franschhoek and judge on kykNET's Kokkedoor TV show; consultant dietitian Madeleine de Villiers; and emeritus associate professor in nutrition and dietetics and part-time consultant, Martinette Stretch.
