Insane in the membrane
In early 2012, an inspired conversation among three comic actors led to the frantic scribbling down of ideas for a new show. Now, after touring Port Elizabeth, East London, Durban, and Johannesburg, The Insanity League's quest for nationwide domination has finally reached Cape Town.
Directed by Greig Coetzee and starring Aaron McIlroy, Ben Voss, and John van de Ruit, The Rise of The Insanity League features a variety of comedy sketches, from talk shows and news broadcasts to insane dating, the history of insanity, and other insane things. All three performs are spot-on in portraying a variety of accents and mannerisms as they paint a picture of how crazy we can be.
Too slapstick at times
Some of the sketches seemed a bit random while the humour did border on being too slapstick at times. And even though it sounds strange in this context, a bit of structure might have helped. Then again, I guess the message here was that we should all embrace the fact that we're kind of crazy. In that case, responding to an insane world with a large dose of insanity makes perfect sense!
The Rise of The Insanity League (PG) is at Cape Town's Theatre on the Bay until 31 August. Tickets are available from Computicket.
