It's official – top SA city guide launched

The first annual issue of Not the Official SA City Guide has been launched to provide invaluable information for visitors to South Africa's leading three cities. Stylish, funny and always irreverent, the free guide book is aimed at local and international visitors to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and surrounding areas.
It's official – top SA city guide launched

This informed, edgy and concise tourist publication was conceived by Sheryl Ozinsky, the unofficial authority of tourism in SA, and Philip Todres, who has been helping visitors find their way around South African cities for decades with his funky and informed maps. And as leading SA satirist and playwright Mike van Graan says, "If I were a city, I'd want the experience, passion and chutzpah of Sheryl Ozinsky and Philip Todres to promote me."

They teamed up with the official hotshots of tourism media, MediaWeb Publishing, of CAPE-i, GO GAUTENG, SAFARI and DISCOVER SA fame, who have been improving tourists' experiences in SA for the past four years, during which time they have distributed over two million magazines to visitors.

The result of this collaboration is a handy publication full of world class photographs, useful information and above all kick-ass attitude, to showcase SA's leading cities. It is written by locals and is idiosyncratic, opinionated and honest. Well-known journalists Suzy Bell (Durban) and Matthew Krause (Johannesburg) hone in on their cities with an informed eye and sharp humour. And there are snippets of information from specialists in various fields.

Ozinsky says: "Whenever I see a new guide I look to see if the content is creative and user friendly, I notice the design style, the fonts used, the clarity of the maps, the relevance of the ads, the people quoted, the photos used. Each time, I say to myself that there is a gap in the market place for a concise and opinionated publication - an honest ‘insider's' assessment, intended to inform the discerning globetrotter."

Not the Official SA City Guide is all of this and maybe even a little more.

90 000 copies of Not the Official SA City Guide will be handed to visitors arriving at the three international airports, leading conference centres, information centres, hotels and guesthouses in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. In addition 10 000 copies of the booklet will be delivered to UK subscribers of the world's leading travel magazine, Condé Nast Traveller, with their May 2008 edition of the magazine.
