There were two Grands Prix announced tonight, Saturday, 26 September 2009, at the 31st Annual Loerie Awards held for the very first time in Cape Town: Ogilvy Johannesburg for Channel O's Experiential Mixed-Media Campaign ‘Young, Gifted & Black', and Net#work BBDO Johannesburg for Virgin Atlantic's Radio Commercial Campaign ‘Ferret, Dancer, Dog, Child' - which also received South Africa's first Cannes Lions Radio Grand Prix in June this year. Overview of Grand Prix winner Ogilvy Johannesburg's Experiential Mixed-Media Campaign ‘Young, Gifted & Black' for Channel O

At the Saturday night ceremony hosted by the SABC, a total of 95 awards were handed out, with two being Grands Prix, eight Gold and five Craft Gold. MC was comedian John Vlismas, making it three years in a row, who played to a mostly full house at the Good Hope Centre which had been especially upgraded for this event. Goldfish and Lira were part of the entertainment.

New Voice Award

The SABC New Voice Award for Non-English Radio was launched this year to promote the production of non-English radio advertising.

The Gold Award went to TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris Johannesburg for ‘Tatollo, Funeral' for Tiger Brands; the Silver Award went to Draftfcb Johannesburg for ‘Bua FM - 1, 2, 3' for Vodacom; and the Bronze Award went to Joe Public for ‘Don't Stop ‘Til You Get Enough, Buffalo Soldier, Beat It' for kalahari.net.

The Vodacom Mobile Media Digital Award

This new award, in partnership with Vodacom Mobile Advertising, recognises the recent growth in the use of mobile devices in the advertising mix. It was awarded to Gloo Digital Design for the ‘Tetralift' mobile entry for Puma.

Gloo Digital Design also took home another new award, The SpaceStation Internet Advertising Award, for its work ‘Connect and U Can' for MWeb.

Tribute to Thabo Motene Marera
