Luxury car imports set to keep up

Not surprisingly, anyone who can afford a car with a tag of half a million or more can probably handle rate hikes without too much stress…

Times might be tough and getting tougher for the domestic car market – but that‘s not going to stop the import of cars costing R500 000 and more in the year ahead.

BMW SA announced yesterday that its X6 – first shown as a concept car at the motor show in Frankfurt this year – is ready for the road and will go on sale locally in Africa in mid-2008.

Prices have not been announced but media reports from Britain say the least-expensive version will retail in the region of £40 000 (about R550 000). Add some duties and keep in mind that the BMW V8 X5 4.8i retails for more than R600 000 and work out how much the X6 will cost.

The all-wheel-drive X6 will be available overseas with a V8 petrol and two versions with diesel engines.
