Greener public transport for Durban by 2015
A few years from now, says IOL, Durban's public transport could be transformed into a more reliable and climate-friendly system. The eThekwini Municipality hopes to have public vehicle fleets running from all suburban areas to places of employment by 2015.
According to a report in the Daily News, Carlos Esteves, deputy head of the municipality's road system management department, said: "We will begin by restructuring current operations and developing existing bus services into larger fleets," adding that construction of bus lanes and of the actual vehicles should begin in 2013.
According to the Daily News report, Professor Roseanne Diab, of the Academy of Science South Africa (ASSAF), says using public transport reduces the city's carbon emissions. "All vehicles emit greenhouse gases, which contribute to global warming."
