Durban waste-to-energy project gets KPMG's thumbs-up
The Bisasar Road site takes up to 3,500 tonnes of municipal solid waste every day, making it Africa's busiest landfill site. It currently generates and exports 6.5 MW into the local grid, sufficient to supply up to 40,000 homes. Landfill gas from the Mariannhill site is combusted to generate energy for up to a further 6,000 homes.
The two sites are separately registered under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) scheme, which also allows for the sale of carbon credits, generating an additional revenue stream for the local municipality, ESI-Africa reports.
