Malema costs Jo'burg R30-million

The chaos in Johannesburg's streets - caused by unruly supporters of Julius Malema, the president of the ANC's Youth League - has cost the city at between R30- and R50-million according to an article published on Times Live.

It quotes the city's Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Keith Brebnor saying that the trashing of the city's streets by unruly Malema supporters forced businesses to close and tarnished South Africa's international image as live video footage showed mobs burning ANC flags and T-shirts bearing President Jacob Zuma's image.

He says Tuesday's chaos followed a "long list of disruptions" that reinforced the perception that the country was becoming unstable as a trading partner.

Brebnor's views were supported by African Rainbow Minerals' executive chairman Patrick Motsepe who warned that increasing negative perceptions were being expressed about South Africa as a competitive business destination.
