Old age home gets early Christmas surprise

Residents of the Kensington Home for the Aged in Cape Town received an early Christmas surprise when they were given a TV, DVD player, DVD's, cleaning products and washing powder by a team from Club Travel in partnership with affiliate, Chelsea Travel.

Club Travel and Chelsea Travel also treated the residents to snacks and treats all in the spirit of the festive season. Kensington Home for the Aged, established in 1971, strives to provide full time, specialised residential care, medical support and a nurturing environment to the aged who come from disadvantaged communities in surrounding areas.

"Club Travel encourages its staff and affiliates to give back. We have a division called Club Cares which selects needy causes and when we heard about The Kensington Home for the Aged, we looked for ways to help. We were really excited when our affiliates at Chelsea Travel stepped in to make a contribution," said Minette Fourie of Club Travel marketing department.

No financial support

The home currently provides and cares for 100 men and women who have no financial or family support and who are unable to provide for themselves. In some cases these residents have been abandoned by family members and many of them feel that they have been abandoned by society.

"The home receives a nominal state subsidy and the small contribution made by residents coupled with the state subsidy is not enough to cover the escalating costs of the upkeep and maintenance of the home. We need to seek financial and in-kind donations and are reliant on the generosity and goodwill of people such as the team from Club Travel and Chelsea Travel. Their support and donation to the Home is gratefully received," said Reverend Brian V. Beck, CEO of the Home.
