Bakwena, who holds a 30 year concession contract with the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) to manage a 385km route on the N1N4 freeway, is not only contracted to providing an essential service in the construction and maintenance of this stretch of road, but is also fully committed to giving back to the communities along the route. The company's corporate social investment (CSI) programme is designed to make a meaningful and long term impact on the safety and well-being of the communities in the areas surrounding the Platinum Corridor.

The beneficiaries of this year's proceeds include the Thusanang Early Learning Centre in Groot Marico, Cansa, Pink Drive and Mohau House in northern Pretoria, who will each receive a portion of the amount raised to effect change within the various projects they are involved in.

More than mending potholes

"Our business' concerns extend beyond just the maintenance of the road that we are responsible for. It goes further than mending potholes and repairing street lights. We have the responsibility towards the people in the area to add critical value by ensuring that their needs are met. Thus, our company has a consistent and sincere commitment to uplifting and improving the lives of community members throughout the North West and southern Limpopo provinces. We have a deep appreciation for our sponsors who made the charity golf day a success as well as our road users who, through the payment of their toll fees, are also contributing to community upliftment," says Charmaine van Wyk, spokesperson for Bakwena.

It is through their involvement and support of various CSI activities that Bakwena strives to work together with the community in implementing change to uplift and empower the people. These programmes are based on partnership and a trust that has been formed between Bakwena, community members and other mutual stakeholders.

The company's main focus in its CSI activities relate to prioritising projects that will uplift and benefit children. However, the company also endeavours to provide road safety, environmental education and health programmes to benefit communities impacted by their operations. The ultimate aim in this regard is to leave a lasting and tangible legacy for people residing in along the concession.
