Western Cape caterer chosen as Carling champion

The Carling community champion has been announced as Selwyn Green, a caterer from Strandfontein in the Western Cape after the public gave him more than 600 votes for his community work.

Green dedicates most of his time to various community building initiatives, which include feeding hundreds of underprivileged kids from squatter camps nearby his home every Sunday and participating in fund-raising initiatives. Carling Black Label has rewarded him with an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Old Trafford soccer stadium to watch the English Premiership League champions in action.

“I am ecstatic about the prize, this is the first time I have ever been this acknowledged for the work that I do in the community, and it is a great feeling. I am a simple man, I do what I can and I don't expect any reward for it,” said Green.

Green's efforts were revealed after Carling Black Label embarked on a three-week search for a Carling hero - a man committed to improving the lives of those around him. Eight finalists were selected from a number of nominations sent in by the public and he was one of them.

All had exceptional stories

“All the men had exceptional stories to tell, from starting a vegetable garden for the older ladies in the community to saving three children out of a burning shack. But Selwyn's selfless and consistent efforts to build his community really hit home with the public,” said Pravesh Moodliar, project brand manager for Carling Black Label. One of Green's biggest fans is Glynnis Gameeldien who nominated him for the competition.

“Every weekend Selwyn cooks at his home for over 400 underprivileged children from the nearby Phumlani squatter camp and he has never expected anything in return. I'm very happy I got an opportunity to show him how much we appreciate what he is doing together with his team,” she said.
