Johnston, himself from a marginalized background, was given the opportunity of a wilderness course in his youth whilst living on the edge of gangsterism and crime. It was the beginning of a life-changing experience for this now accomplished mountain guide, environment conservationist, and champion of change.
“I passionately believe in outdoor experiential education as a means to instil positive values and attitude, enhance leadership abilities and self-reliance through encouragement, motivation, patience, leadership and understanding,” said Johnston. “We are confident that the On the Edge initiative will raise huge awareness and enough funds for us to continue to assist in developing the potential and responsibility of individuals so that they become contributing members of society.”
Educo Africa is a non-profit organisation that seeks to develop leadership and personal mastery through outdoor- and wilderness-based experiential learning programmes. Since its inception in 1994, the NGO has facilitated the healing, empowerment, training and development of thousands of young people with specialised focus on youth at risk or in need.
Throughout the week, presenters from Good Hope FM will be broadcasting live from the ledge.
