    CANSA approves BPA-free baby range

The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) has endorsed the first full BPA-free baby product range, Nuby's Natural Touch range, distributed by Akacia in Southern Africa. The product range qualified for the CANSA Smart Choice Seal.

Some baby bottles contain a chemical called Bisphenol-A (BPA) that migrates into milk and other fluids, especially when heated or micro-waved. BPA can interfere with a baby's hormonal development and has been linked to a host of serious health problems in later life, including childhood obesity, premature puberty, erectile dysfunction and even breast cancer. Children under three years of age are more susceptible to BPA because their brains are still forming, they lack the enzymes to inactivate BPA and they eat ten times more per day per body weight than adults do. The use of BPA in products such as baby bottles has already been banned in Canada, France, Denmark, China, Malaysia and the European Union and why CANSA is campaigning for South Africa to follow suit.

"Over the past three years CANSA has studied the pro- and anti-Bisphenol A (BPA) scientific evidence and is convinced that BPA, which is hormonally active, poses a threat to human health, specifically by increasing the risk of breast or prostate cancer," explains CANSA CEO, Sue Janse van Rensburg. In order to reduce this increased risk CANSA advocates replace polycarbonate baby bottles containing BPA with BPA-free bottles.

Michael Ariel, president of international sales for Nuby, says "We're very pleased to receive this recognition, as we've been at the forefront of keeping babies safe. As one of the first companies to offer a full range of BPA-free dummies, bottles and cups, as well as having every product phthalates and PVC-free, we continue to champion safe feeding products in all 150+ countries in which we are present."

Nuby has over 75 patents worldwide and was the first baby product manufacturer to ban PVC and BPA products from its ranges. Made from medical silicone, the product range is a premium, affordable product with a soft feel and natural shape and most importantly it's safe for babies.

"We play an important 'watchdog' role for South Africans by advocating safe products that reduce their cancer risk and join hands with partners that take the responsibility of South African's health seriously," Janse van Rensburg concludes.
