DStv 'scores' at Nigerian Cup final

SuperSport's involvement in Nigerian football was taken to the next level at last weekend's Nigerian Cup final between Ocean Boys and Gombe United in Makurdi. The DStv channel's commitment to Nigerian football includes training programmes for individuals involved in all aspects of broadcasting, from operating cameras to production and directing.

A full 21-man Nigerian crew was trained to cover the Cup final, with Lanre Ojoawo as director. Among the others involved were Ifeanyi Ene, Femi Hastrop (both on cameras), Tosi Fadenyi, Fortune Ukpong, Mufutawu Akinwande and Maurice Kawel.

The broadcast was a resounding success, with the match finishing 2-2 after regulation time and going to a penalty shootout, in which Ocean Boys eventually triumphed 7-6.

A new outside broadcast van was used for the first time for the production and seven cameras were used. Apart from the actual filming of the match, the local crew was also responsible for everything from engineering to audio and uplink of the signal to DStv's Johannesburg headquarters.

"We aim to be a proudly Nigerian initiative at every level - Nigerian sport for Nigerians, by Nigerians," said Gary Rathbone, SuperSport International's Head of Africa.
