R140m dairy plant for EL

A R140-million dairy agro-processing plant at the East London industrial development zone (IDZ) is set to resurrect the dairy industry in the Eastern Cape and create more than 200 employment opportunities.

The IDZ said the Sunningdale Dairy plant, which will come online in June, will produce fresh milk, maas, yoghurt, cheese, butter and blended juices. These products will be distributed across the Eastern Cape and other parts of the continent.

Sunningdale managing director Neil van Rensburg said the plant would be the first of its kind in the Eastern Cape.

"We are resurrecting the dairy industry in the Eastern Cape. We will be processing dairy products that are of European Union standard. It will be a full range of dairy products. We will be employing 250 people. The farmers who will be supplying us employ thousands," said Van Rensburg.

The new factory, he said, would also be going green by recycling some 300000 litres of water every day.

According to IDZ agro-processing sector manager, Unathi Speirs, the plant was due for completion this month.
