New wine packaging is ultra-light and octagonal

Distell, producer and marketer of fine wines and spirits, has created a brand new category within the local wine market with the launch of four wine brands in revolutionary new, convenient and 100% recyclable Tetra Prisma packaging.

The ultra-light, innovative 1-litre octagonal packaging boasts a screw cap and is ideal for active South African lifestyles. The new packaging is 40% lighter than bottled wine, and is claimed to reduce packaging waste by up to 90% compared with glass bottles.

The four brands selected for the new Wine on the Move innovation, Drostdy-Hof, Vinot, Chatta' Box and Obikwa, have been designed to reach distinctly different wine consumption markets. The former ranges carry vintage varietal wines, while Chatta' Box and Obikwa feature more fun loving, quality certified blends.

"Our innovation is a response to the ongoing and robust growth of various new packaging formats in major overseas markets where convenience and recycling have been the major driving forces," said brand manager Shelley Ellse, who adds that the company's aim is not to replace bottled wines, but rather to add to the versatility of quality wine offerings and making wine more convenient and acceptable, ultimately making wine more accessible.

Advantages of the new entirely recyclable packs are claimed to include portability - they're easy to carry - light, unbreakable and take up very little shelf space. The screw cap provides added convenience making them easy to open and reseal and easy to store. Having the screw cap also means no more cork-taint. The pack is said to cool rapidly, taking only a fraction of the time to cool to the ideal drinking temperature, compared with glass. Impermeable to light and completely sterile, Prisma packs are designed for a lifespan of 12 months unopened, and four days once opened.

Prices range from R18.99 for the 1 litre Obikwa to R25.99-R27.99 for the 1 litre Drostdy-Hof.
