Key purpose of the role

To assist, support and facilitate the highest standards of journalism, and in so doing contribute to the overall on air and online product of the business.

Key outputs/accountability

• Taking full responsibility for the forward planning diary across both cities – ensuring it is updated, accurate and reflects contributions from both news editors.
• Assisting with detailed briefs to reporters on long term/feature stories
• Managing the production processes associated with long term/feature stories to ensure they are delivered on time, on brief and to the requisite standard 
• Daily assignments of multimedia reporters 
• Assisting with subbing duties across cities throughout the shift
• On occasion, assisting with writing stories and cutting sound where necessary 
• Deputise for Cape Town and Johannesburg news editors, assuming full responsibility for their day-to-day duties including
  Daily diary setting
• Engaging with sources to ensure that EWN is always top of mind and we do not miss major events

Educational qualifications

• Matric
• Relevant tertiary qualification or requisite demonstrable experience

Required knowledge and experience

• 5 to 7 years editorial experience in an established newsroom
• Newsroom management or oversight experience
• Knowledge of and interest in both broadcast and online news environments would be an added advantage
• Thorough working knowledge of news production and the media environment.
• Excellent knowledge of journalistic ethics, the legal framework within which the media works, and all the codes to which we submit ourselves (BCCSA Code of conduct; Press Code etc)
• Demonstratable experience building teams and fostering collaboration across diverse individuals and departments
• Demonstrable knowledge of the craft of radio journalism
• High levels of computer literacy
• Knowledge of digital editing software – Newsroom or equivalent

• Time management – managing one’s own time and the time of others.
