Show profile Hide profileJames Moffett is one of South Africa's leading practitioners of sustainable farming methods. As executive manager and leaseholder of Kirklington Farms in the Ficksburg district from 1990 to 2015, he pioneered and has continued to practice organic farming of a variety of enterprises, including asparagus, beef (Aberdeen Angus, Hereford, Tuli & Sussex), dry land crops (dry beans, grain sorghum, maize, rye, sunflower, soyabeans, wheat, barley), fruit (apricots & peaches), mutton & wool (Dohne & Mutton Merino) and irrigation vegetables (fine beans, butternut, mange tout, radish, sweet corn) on 2800 hectares. Under his management, organic production status was awarded to Kirklington and Middelpunt farms according to European Union Regulations in 1996.
James has extensive experience in certification and export of organic produce from South Africa to European countries. He was actively involved in the coordination of processing and export of organic fruit and vegetables. In December 1997 the first certified organic peaches were exported to France from Kirklington Farms (first in SA). He organised and facilitated the organic certification of Industrial Development Corporation's Deemster Canning Factory according to EU Regulations in 1998. In the same year the first certified organic peaches were processed and exported to Germany for the making of baby food. He established certified pharmaceutical herb plantations for local and export markets in 2004.
He is an experienced supplier of organic fresh produce to the local market and export market and has supplied Pick 'n Pay Retailers with certified organic fruit and vegetables since 1999. James established and constructed The Organic Milling Company to supply certified organic flour to Pick 'n Pay Bakeries in December 2000, this being the first certified organic mill in South Africa. Also in 2000, the first certified organic sunflower oil is pressed from Kirklington sunflower seed to supply the local market in 2000. He is committed to the continual training of farm staff in sustainable organic production and marketing and has introduced profit sharing.
He has worked with both local and international government and academic institutions in an advisory capacity on a variety of organic agricultural projects and has lectured on a number of related topics in South Africa and abroad.
James has appeared in the media (television and print) on a number of occasions, promoting and stressing the importance of farming, particularly organic farming, in solving some of the problems besetting modern farming and human health. Most recently, he and his family appeared on the BBC's program "Around the World in 80 Gardens" in which the family garden and farm were featured.
