Authorities around the world have reacted with alarm to a new coronavirus variant detected in South Africa.
Dutch health authorities announced they had detected 61 Covid-19 cases among people who flew from South Africa on Friday and believe at least some infections are of the new Omicron variant.
Britain announced on Thursday that it would be temporarily halting flights from South Africa and some neighbouring countries owing to the threat of the new Covid-19 variant B.1.1.529, leaving travellers in a state of disarray.
