Winning architecture team to design first decarbonised district of France announced

The winning project has been announced for the "Inventing Bruneseau" competition organised by the City of Paris and the SEMAPA. The winning team, including Adjaye Associates, Buzzo Spinelli Architecture, Hardel le Bihan and Youssef Tohme Architects, will design a new major development that will be the first decarbonised district of France.

The project, called Nouvel R, will be developed by the consortium of developers comprising AG Real Estate, Icade, Les Nouveaux Constructeurs (legal representative) and Nexity, associated with the retail specialist Frey, and will create an uninterrupted urban continuity between Paris and Ivry sur Seine.

Covering a 95,000m2 area with offices, housing, shops and retail amenities, the environmental ambition of the Bruneseau project is the highest in the current state of constructional options: to develop the first completely decarbonised district in France, and divide by five the carbon footprint linked to the buildings.

Local energy generation

"This ambition to obtain the E+C- certification, piloted by Elioth, will be made possible thanks to the massive use of wood in the floors, and the generation of local energy at a level never before attained for an urban project of this scope. 65% of the energy consumed in the district will be either renewable or recovered, and 50% will be generated on site," the team stated in a press release.

"Its ambition looks to create a unique and sustainable urban response and establish a greater sense of place for future generations. To be part of the winning team, alongside Hardel Le Bihan, Youssef Tohmé and Buzzo Spinelli, feels momentous and cements our ideology that great design and making places of purpose and function stems from a collection of knowledge, experience, and understanding," said David Adjaye of Adjaye Associates.
