Distell captures New York spirit
In its first entry into the 2011 New York International Spirits Competition, Distell was awarded the title of Distillery of the Year, winning the only double gold medal of the show, in an event that attracted over 300 entries from 30 nations worldwide. The double gold honours went to Oude Meester's specialty, top-of-the range, Souverein.
The competition, which brings together New York's leading importers, distributors, hotel beverage directors, restaurant and retail store owners to judge submissions by category and according to price point, also awarded silver medals to Oude Meester Reserve 12 Year Old and Van Ryn's 20 Year Old. Its cane spirit, Mainstay, earned a third silver medal.
According to portfolio spokesperson, Carrie Sanders, what makes the winning of the competition so significant is that its judging draws on the industry expertise of key members of the trade who serve as the gatekeepers to New York's influential consumer base.
"New York is regarded by many as the style bar and club capital of the US. Trends are set here that are followed worldwide."
