SIU's Davids gets his job back
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) announced on Thursday (2 May) that its deputy head Faiek Davids would be reinstated after he was fired by former SIU boss Willie Hofmeyr in 2010.
"After a careful review of the legal dispute between the SIU and Faiek Davids, the parties have agreed to settle this dispute‚" acting SIU head Nomvula Mokhatla and Davids's attorney Sonia de Vries said in a joint statement.
"It is clear to both parties that further pursuing of this matter will not serve either party or the public interest."
Mokhatla had consulted lawyers involved in the matter and took into account the evidence led in the Commission for Conciliation‚ Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA)‚ hearing.
In a letter addressed to Davids in October 2010‚ Hofmeyr said that there had been a complete breakdown of trust between Davids and his colleagues.
Hofmeyr noted a systematic breakdown following the discovery of the controversial spy tapes that led to corruption charges against President Jacob Zuma being withdrawn in 2009.
The matter went to the CCMA and the Labour Court.
Mokhatla and De Vries said Davids' reinstatement was effective from 1 December‚ 2010 and he would be starting work at the SIU shortly.
"The parties look forward to rebuilding the SIU and its success in becoming an effective anti-corruption agency. Davids' willingness to be a part of this is appreciated," the statement said.
