Given the job losses the industry is facing, particularly in the platinum sector, the specific mandate of the board will be to research the issue and present a report to minister by 31 July 2016.

The board’s other responsibilities include direct engagement with primary right holders and organised labour through the minister’s open door policy, as he continues to direct efforts to save jobs and ameliorate the impact of the current market conditions.

Collaborative stakeholder participation

Initially set up in terms of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) in 2004, the mission of the board is to create coherent and collaborative stakeholder participation in the governance of a competitive and sustainable, minerals and petroleum industry
.

Sustainable development

It also advises the minister on matters he refers to the board; and on sustainable development of the nation's mineral and petroleum resources.

The board is supplementary to the Mining Industry Growth Development and Employment Task Team (MIGDETT), and acts as an alternative resource to the minister.

Six members back on board

As part of the Act, Section 62(2), allows the Minister to extend the term of office of any members in order to carry out a specific mandate.

The Minister has reappointed six of the previous board members, including Khetiwe McClain, chairperson; Smunda Mokoena, deputy chairperson and organised labour representative; David Msiza, chief inspector of mines (currently acting DG of the DMR), Luthando Brukwe, organised labour; Neale Baartjes, business and Vusi Mabena, Chamber of Mines.
