Cape Town wants to shed its 'pricey' tag

The Western Cape is trying to overturn global perceptions that it's an expensive destination and does not offer value for money, according to Mariette Du Toit-Helmbold, chief executive of Cape Town Tourism.

She says the city is working directly with management representatives in key source destinations to get a message across that Cape Town remains a value-for-money destination even in the peak seasons between November and February.

The city has earned this reputation because of the rack-rate of five-star hotel accommodation while the four-star and three-star establishments are offering exceptional value for money with wonderful facilities.

Cape Town was ranked as the 158th most expensive city in the world, well down on the list of expensive destinations for travellers seeking budget holidays in the current economic climate.

Du Toit-Helmbold has urged all hotels, tourism operators and travel organisations to keep drumming home the message that Cape Town does offer value for money particularly in venues other than the flamboyant and prestigious five-star hotels such as the One and Only and the Table Bay View.
