Nedlac agreement on labour amendments
Business Report quotes Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant as saying that Nedlac's partners have agreed to amendments to two labour bills - the Labour Relations Act and the Basic Conditions of Employment Act - that force employers to provide reasons to courts for employing people on a temporary basis.
The change also means that employers could face criminal charges for not paying workers overtime. Oliphant hinted that there might be provisions to criminalise labour broking and limit temporary employment included in the bills, Business Report further reports.
The four changes were gazetted in December last year and Oliphant has now called for a speedy resolution of the debate surrounding the bills so that they can be tabled in Parliament as soon as possible.
According to Business Report, Cosatu has threatened to hold mass action protests against labour broking.
