'Eye in the dark' to combat cable theft?

Carl Zeiss Optronics has offered this technology to the Bombela consortium responsible for running the Gautrain after last week's disruption of train services as a result of cable theft. The company has also held discussions with Transnet, Eskom and Telkom in an effort to combat cable thefts.
The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry yesterday reported in its monthly Copper Theft Barometer that copper thefts had reached R15,8 million in July, slightly higher than the June level of R14,3 million.
Carl Zeiss ZA is a subsidiary of the German company but Denel has a 30% stake in the local operation and helped it to develop the "eye in the dark" camera.
