Renewable energy: The role of hydrogen

The primary source of energy on Earth is the Sun. All energy we use today comes from the Sun. Energy from the Sun makes waves in the sea, causes winds and rain, and makes plants grow, and plants produce food for animals and humans. Coal, oil and gas are fossil fuels that were deposited millions of years ago as a result of plant activity using the Sun's energy. We have become dependent on fossil fuels such as coal and gas to produce electricity on a large scale, on petroleum products for transport and for the cultivation of land for grain and other food for humans and animals. An unwanted by product of electricity generation is pollution. Carbon dioxide, acid rain, soot and fine dust are pollutants that cause serious threats to the Earth's ecology and to our future existence.
