IT student wins award
Meet Port Elizabeth student Simone Beets, whose paper on how information is presented on the internet was judged the best at a conference for the ICT and engineering industries.
Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University's computer science professor Andre Calitz said the department was proud of Beets.
"Her paper was seen as best of them all.
"She is the first female to win the award and that makes us extremely proud of her."
Beets said she started her research in January last year. "My research showed that the way that the information is presented on the web is not suitable. People struggle to find what they are looking for and to understand it."
"It has been hard work but if you put in the effort it will pay off.
"I'm not a total nerd, I have a boyfriend and try to balance everything. I always put in as much work as I can in everything," she said.
Beets, the first person in her family to be awarded a degree, said she was considering studying for a doctorate next year.
