Cape Town hosts first Africa-held Astron-Conference
The small South African space industry is ever-growing, with a substantial sector of the country's economy depending on space, including satellite TV and telecommunications satellite technology. Satellite imagery is increasingly being used in agriculture to manage crops and grazing and monitor water resources, as well as assist in urban planning and facilitate weather forecasting.
The International Astronautical Conference is the topmost get-together of the space exploration industry and an excellent exposure-opportunity for local scientists and institutions. Speaking at a press briefing on the IAC in Johannesburg, Dr Sandile Malinga, CEO of the South African National Space Agency said that, "South Africa is finally being taken seriously ... in terms of space science and technology".
