SA scientist in world first
Ishmael Msiza comes from Kameelrivier B - a small village in KwaNdebele, Mpumalanga, and as a young researcher at the CSIR, he is in his element. He works with the biometrics research group, which is part of the CSIR Modelling and Digital Science unit, where he and other young persons strive to establish themselves as scientists and engineers on a global scale. Msiza and the other members of the team work on ways to combat identity theft and related crimes.
Msiza has recently developed a structural fingerprint classifier that can classify a fingerprint with only partial information - a world first - as well as introducing novel fingerprint features as a feeder to his classifier. "Our country has always been a passive consumer when it comes to biometric technologies," Msiza says. He adds that being passive consumers makes us vulnerable to security breaches.
The ambitious young researcher sees himself creating multiple patents, and even writing a few books.
