Cashbuild helps competition winners build a future

Cashbuild recently continued to build on its community outreach initiatives by launching a competition that has the potential to change lives. Previous initiatives include donations of building materials, and the creation of opportunities for local contractors through glass cutting and local delivery services. The new "Win a Start Up Business" competition takes things to the next level by creating the foundations upon which winners can build a future.

Rather than simply offering Cashbuild customers the chance to win a "once-off" grand prize, as is common with many competitions, Cashbuild chose to make a more long-term impact for the lucky winners by providing all the start-up tools needed to launch a small building business. This could potentially empower the winner to become independent and offer other members of their community a chance to make a better living. With job creation and community development top of mind, Cashbuild's "Win a Start Up Business" competition yielded two lucky winners, each winning a grand prize valued at over R200,000.

Start up business winners

The first winner, Sylvia Lentsoana (47) from Dennilton went home with prizes including:

  • A Tata Super Ace 1-ton bakkie
  • Building materials from Cashbuild worth R50,000
  • Lasher builders' tools worth R8000
  • Bosch power tools worth R2000
  • Afrisam business and building skills training worth R40,000

Lentsoana, a family woman and teacher of 23 years, will use the prize to start her own building business and hopes to create much-needed opportunities for her community. "This will change everything for me as I have wanted to build a house for so many years," Lentsoana said. "This opportunity will give me the chance to finally finish up my house and also help those who are unemployed."

Lentsoana is a regular Cashbuild customer and was overjoyed to learn of her good fortune. Training, proudly provided by Afrisam, will help equip Lentsoana with the skills and expertise she will require to grow her new business to its fullest potential, and Cashbuild hopes to continue to provide her with quality products and services as her building business grows to new heights.

The second lucky winner, Ntuthuko Myeza (35), a nurse, had no idea that his trip to Cashbuild and subsequent entry into the competition would result in him becoming the proud owner of:

  • A Tata Super Ace 1-ton bakkie
  • A mobile workshop worth R20,000 from Copper Tubing Africa
  • Cashbuild building materials worth R50,000
  • Marley plumbing supplies worth R10,000
  • Business and building skills training worth R40,000 from Afrisam

"I am still in disbelief," said Myeza. "I can't believe that this has happened to me."

Sustainable empowerment

Cashbuild and Tata are thrilled to have been able to provide this wonderful opportunity for the winners and hope that their communities will benefit in the long-term.

Cashbuild chief executive, Werner De Jager said, "We hope that Cashbuild can play a part in empowering South Africans to support themselves in a sustainable manner. We offer local contractors opportunities to provide services such as glass cutting and delivery at our stores and also donate building materials to schools in need of refurbishment. Community investment is something that Cashbuild takes very seriously. We hope that the 'Win a Start up Business' competition will make a difference in the lives of our winners."
