Poor water supply and sanitation in SA
The water supplies and sanitation levels in Free State are worrying according to Pregs Govender, deputy chairman of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

Govender was speaking in Bloemfontein on Wednesday (10 July) and warned that the water and sanitation problems were not only rife in Free State but in other poor communities across the country.
Asked if their findings into the investigation into Free State's Dihlabeng, Setsotso, Metsimaholo and the Masilonyana local municipalities and the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality painted a bad picture, Govender responded: "It is a bad picture."
Govender said that poor people should be made a priority.
The commission found that women and children in the Masilonyana municipality were exposed to danger as they had to walk long distances to fetch water.
"The inadequate access to water (has) had a disproportionately negative effect on women, as women are often singly responsible for child care, cleaning and domestic chores," Govender said.
The SAHRC's provincial chairman Buang Jones said wrongly placed priorities by certain municipalities had resulted in communities facing serious water shortages.
