Robben Island staff on strike
Workers at the Robben Island Museum have started an indefinite strike in support of demands for a "living wage" and the introduction of the 2010/11 settlement agreement according to an article published by The New Age.
The National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union claims that management at the museum had shown an "unbelievable level of impertinence" by refusing to negotiate with the union and telling its members that they were not entitled to any wage increases in the current financial year.
Nehawu officially declared a dispute with the museum last week. Members are demanding an increase of R3 500 a month across the board and want the museum to close between 25 December and 2 January each year.
Staff are to picket in front of the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the Waterfront in Cape Town from 6.30am every day.
