More job losses on the cards for SA

Times Live quotes Ian Ollis, the Democratic Alliance's spokesman on Labour as saying the poor ranking by the ILO is due to the government's inability to adapt the economic policy to the current economic climate.

However, other analysts have said that the unemployment levels are a direct result of the labour laws in South Africa that make it difficult to fire people and makes employers reluctant to provide full time jobs, preferring instead to opt for fixed-term contracts.

Statistics South Africa says the official unemployment level is 4,5-million but the consensus from Adcorp, the Congress of South African Trade Unions and statistician-general Pali Lehohla is that the figure is closer to 8-million particularly as millions of potential work-seekers have given up on their quest to find employment.
