Political parties await final results

Those who are stationed at the centre have been there for many hours and energy drinks and blankets can be seen across the centre. Despite their tired eyes, representatives are in a jovial mood, especially those whose parties seem to be doing well.

Speaking to SAnews shortly after his arrival in the centre on Friday morning, African National Congress (ANC) spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said although they were still waiting for the remaining 5% of the results, he was confident that the outstanding results would not affect the position of his party.

"There is no way that the ANC can move from the top, instead we are expecting an increase in the number of votes once the outstanding votes comes in," said a visibly excited Mthembu.

After 7:15am, 94.65% votes had been counted and completed, with the ANC leading with over ten million votes.

The results displayed on the leader board, showed that ANC lead with 10,340,146 (62.51%), followed by the DA with 3,630,569 (21.95%). The new kids on the block, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) were trailing at third spot with 1,004,731 (6.07%) and IFP with 405,808 (2.45%).

The top three parties leading nationally are also taking a lead in the Gauteng province, where 71.6% votes have been completed. In Gauteng, the ANC is leading with 1,605,329 (53.59%) votes followed by DA with 930,559 (31.07%) and EFF with 299,183 (9.99%).

The ANC is also leading in all other provinces, except in the Western Cape, where the DA is leading with 1,142,493 (58.94%), followed by the ANC with 645,775 (33.31%) and EFF on third with 40,079 (2.07%).

However, the Congress of the People is not doing very well compared to the 2009 elections. So far, the party has only managed to get 113,329 (0.68%) votes.
