Justice Minister Jeff Radebe on Wednesday (16 January) called on eligible candidates to apply for the job of a sheriff in the various offices around the country. There are 130 vacancies.

"Sheriffs are officers of the court. It is imperative that they understand and practise the values embodied in the Constitution in the execution of their duties," he said in a statement.

"We call on all persons who are fit and proper to occupy the office of a sheriff to apply for these vacant posts to further enhance the transformation and to attain gender equality of the sheriffs profession."

He said the applicants should display the necessary "technical competence and experience" required and have an understanding of the relevant legislation governing the office of a sheriff.

The department had been making a "concerted effort to redress past imbalances in the profession", he said.

In August 2012, Radebe approved the appointment of 124 sheriffs.

"The sheriffs play a critical role in the administration of civil justice. Sheriffs are an important interface between the public and the justice system," he said.

Of the 130 posts advertised, 27 are in the Eastern Cape, 21 in Free State, 19 in Limpopo, 14 in the Western Cape, 13 in Northern Cape, 11 in KwaZulu-Natal, 10 in the North West, eight in Mpumalanga and seven in Gauteng.
